How To Clean Your Kegerator Lines, Kegs, and Brewing Equipment With SAFECID

Kegerator Line & Equipment Cleaning

A step by step guide to cleaning your kegs, draft lines and brewing equiment with SAFECID Alkaline Cleaner

Cleaning your kegs for homebrewing is essential in ensuring that you can enjoy top-notch beer time after time. It’s not just your keg either; it is important to properly care for and clean your beer lines and taps as well. The initial setup of a Cornelius keg, in particular, requires special attention as they should be reconditioned and the o-rings replaced prior to use. Cleaning agents are often used, but all residues should be cleared away before using the keg, to avoid off flavors in your brews. Cleaning your homebrew system right means great tasting beer. Ready to make a great beer at home? Let’s get started!

STEP 1

Use the Pressure Relief Valve (PRV) to release pressure in the keg, open the lid and rinse any remaining beer or residue

Step 2

Fill the Keg with HOT water (130-170F) and dose with the appropriate amount of Safecid Alkaline Cleaner. PH should be at least 11 or higher, then let soak for up to an hour.

Step 3

Drain Safecid Alkaline Cleaner through your taps into:

  1. A bucket using CO2 or a hand pump or
  2. By pouring into a bucket or drain.

Rinse the keg thoroughly, and push water through tap lines to rinse as well.

Step 4

Fill keg again, and dose with your preferred Sanitizer. Ensure the PH gets below 3.5.  Soak for at least 15 minutes.

Step 5

Drain the Sanitizer. Push the sanitizer through your tap lines into a bucket with CO2 – this purges the keg of oxygen AND sanitizes your beer lines at the same time. Use the leftover Sanitizer to prep your parts for step 6.

Step 6

Make sure the keg is purged (2-6 PSI through the dip tube for 20 seconds if you didn’t purge through the tap line in step 5), then using your preferred transfer method (siphon or pressure) move your recently finished and chilled beer to the keg for carbonation and serving

Step 7

Once your fermenter is empty, open and give it a good rinse to remove trub, yeast, hop debris, and any residual beer. Then Fill with HOT water, and dose with the appropriate amount of Safecid Alkaline Cleaner (the closer to 14pH the better!)
